We are proud to announce the recipients of our first Freestone Future Leaders scholarship awards.
Our inaugural recipients include graduating high school seniors and current college students who demonstrate strong commitments to community, and a drive to make a difference through servant leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit.
The winning students are Kellan Burgess-Alm from Seattle attending the University of Washington; Lily Morgan from Gold Bar, Washington attending Seattle Pacific University; Andrew Ho from Clackamas, Oregon and John Llamas from Pasadena, California attending the University of Southern California; and Ashley Garcia from San Bernardino, California attending the University of California, Berkley.
Each student earned $5,000 in financial support for the fall 2018 school term.
In the words of our founder Gary Furukawa: “We were very impressed by the ambition and compassion of the students we got to know through our scholarship. The five winners are exemplary citizens and we know they’ll have a positive impact on their communities as they pursue higher education to achieve their dreams.”
Scholarship recipients expressed outstanding community involvement, aptitude and entrepreneurial skillsets to stand apart from hundreds of highly qualified applicants. Their community involvement included leading youth organizations, supporting people experiencing homelessness and mentoring disadvantaged students.
“With students pursuing degrees in international business, business administration, political science and public health, we uncovered an amazing group of analytical thinkers, doers and future leaders, and we look forward to seeing them succeed in their studies and beyond,” said senior partner Erik Morgan.
